France crashed out of a home Rugby World Cup in heartbreaking fashion as they went down to South Africa in one of the greatest matches of all time and Antoine Dupont slammed the refereeing in the aftermath of the loss keno
A thrilling quarter-final at the Stade de France ended with the Springboks triumphing 29-28 as France’s last-gasp stand to try and find the single score that would have led them to victory came up agonisingly short, in an excruciatingly similar manner to Ireland 24 hours earlier at the same stadium keno
In a match decided by the finest of margins, Les Bleus captain Dupont – whose recovery from a fractured cheekbone suffered just 24 hours prior had dominated the build-up to the game –was unhappy with referee Ben O’Keeffe and let rip in his post-match press conference keno
“It’s hard to talk about these things because there’s lots of disappointment and frustration,” said Dupont keno
“We could have had some penalties at crucial moments keno
“I don’t want to be a bad loser and moan about the refereeing but I don’t think the refereeing was up to the level of what was at stake keno
It’s not just one person, there are TMOs, assistant referees and they have time to review images as the game is going on keno
“This doesn’t take anything away from South Africa’s performance, they played a great game keno

It was a tight call and would have been a penalty, sin-binning and possibly even a penalty try had the ball been deemed to have gone forward off the Springbok lock’s hand keno
Etzekeno beth was later sin-binned for making contact with Uini Atonio’s head in a tackle but after bunker review, it was decided that a yellow card was sufficient and it wasn’t upgraded to red keno

It is illegal not to support your own bodyweight when playing the ball in a ruck keno
After such an incredible quarter-final, it was a shame to be talking about the referee and while head coach Fabien Galthie also hinted at his dissatisfaction at O’Keeffe’s performance, he was keen to give South Africa their due for a scintillating performance keno
“I understand the players’ frustration,” said Galthie keno
“I ask them to be brave but at such times keno
keno
keno
I will accept it [the refereeing] keno
This doesn’t take anything away from South Africa’s performance keno
“They showed their experience and they dominated us in the fight keno
I don’t want to take that away from them keno
There’s just frustration, a lot of emotions and it’s hard to take keno
“We’ve worked with the referees ahead of this tournament and during the World Cup and we will continue to do so keno
”South Africa captain Siya Kolisi also brushed off any potential controversy and instead focused on a remarkable game of rugby keno
“All we can do is play rugby, we can’t control the decisions the referee makes,” said Kolisi keno
“We will have to look again but I felt he let the game flow well and his decisions were ok keno
I’ve never discredited a referee and I never will keno
“Antoine got his own opinion but the game was an amazing game keno
It flowed, it was physical and there were lots of contests keno
The atmosphere was amazing and it was a perfect stage for everything keno

First came the crack in Alexander Volkanovski‘s defence keno
Then, the crack in his voice keno
If the first crack was consequential, allowing Islam Makhachev to skim his shin off the Australian’s head, the latter was a consequence in itself – a consequence of one of the best fighters alive staying silent on his struggles with mental health keno
That is, until now keno
Volkanovski would have emerged from UFC 294 with credit anyway; he stepped in on 11 days’ notice and moved up in weight to challenge a man who had beaten him eight months prior keno
Even in this surprising, first-round defeat by Makhachev, Volkanovski lost very little keno
His featherweight title still rests firmly on his shoulder, and he will soon return to that weight class where he has been unbeatable keno
But soon may be too soon keno
In his post-fight press conference, Volkanovski began the dissection of this defeat – his second this year, but just his third as a professional mixed martial artist, with his first having occurred a long decade ago keno
The 35-year-old started to dissect the technical reasons for this knockout loss, but it soon became apparent what was of greater importance: the psychological reasons for his presence in Abu Dhabi keno
“He’s not somebody you should be taking a short-notice [fight] with, but I needed it,” Volkanovski began keno
“Obviously a lot of people will say it’s for the money and all that, but it was much more than that keno
It is hard, it is really hard for athletes keno
keno
keno
Sorry, um keno
keno
keno
I never thought I would struggle with it,” he continued, ignoring the blood over his eye, instead wiping a tear from beneath it keno
“But for some reason when I wasn’t fighting or in camp keno
keno
keno
F***, sorry,” he said, attempting a laugh, looking away and to the ceiling, then gently rapping his hand on the table to bring himself back into the room keno

“I needed a fight, and this opportunity came up keno
I’ll be honest: I wasn’t training as much as I should have, but I thought I had to do it keno
I had to take it keno
I’m telling myself, ‘It’s meant to be keno
’ I was struggling a little bit not fighting, doing my head in keno
I don’t know how; everything’s fine, I’ve got a beautiful family keno
But, I don’t know keno
keno
keno
I think you just need to keep busy keno
I need to be in camp, otherwise, I’m going to do my head in keno
“It’s weird, [it’s not that I] never ‘believed in that stuff’, but I never got it keno
It was something that – I don’t know – maybe the more and more I learn about myself, the more I understand keno
I talked about us having a smile on my face, me and my wife keno
My wife could see it does get hard, I don’t know why keno
”Makhachev consoles Volkanovski after their fight, the main event of UFC 294 (AP)Volkanovski pointed to the birth of his third child, in August, and surgery on an injury this summer as reasons why he had not been training keno
Clearly, the knock-on effect of those moments – as joyous as the former seemed to be – has led Volkanovski’s mental health to suffer keno
Last week, all the talk was of how brave the Australian was to face Makhachev on short notice; braver was this admission that he is struggling, which simultaneously offers a different lens through which to view his choice to fight keno
Keeping himself engaged and busy is healthy, but that is complicated by the inherent risk in his profession keno
“Maybe it was just a silly decision under the circumstances,” he admitted keno
Perhaps it was, though it was also understandable keno
Volkanovski’s next challenge, however, will come outside of the ring keno
It must keno
He naturally sees the antidote to his current struggles as a quick turnaround to fight again, likely against the dangerous Ilia Topuria in January keno
Yet, that fight could go the same way as Saturday’s against Makhachev, if the Australian does not first tackle these thoughts and feelings, and find the right balance for him keno
We knew Alexander Volkanovski was brave keno
That is even clearer now than it was last week keno
Now, however, he must be sensible, and get to work outside the ring before he can return to work in it keno
