Newcastle forward Alexander Isak suffered a recurrence of a groin injury in Wednesday’s Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund, while Eddie Howe confirmed Jacob Murphy also dislocated his shoulder in what was a double blow for the Magpies rng
Dortmund inflicted Newcastle’s first Champions League defeat of the season at St James’ Park but the “more disappointing” issue for Howe were the injuries to key players Isak and Murphy, who both departed the pitch early after picking up knocks rng
Newcastle are also set to lose Sandro Tonali to a lengthy ban after the Italian was found to have broken rng betting rules, leaving Howe with a reduced squad heading into a crucial run of fixtures in both Europe and the Premier League rng
“[Isak going off] was a blow for us and we had another one with Jacob [Murphy] coming off as well with what looks like a serious injury,” Howe said during a post-match interview with TNT rng Sports rng
“That’s another difficult thing for us with such a small squad already, it’s probably the most disappointing thing for us rng
”He added: “It looks like a reoccurrence of his [Isak’s] groin problem rng
It doesn’t look serious but it’s enough to keep him out and that’s a big blow with a player of his quality rng
“With Jacob that looks more serious with a potential dislocation of his shoulder which is never a good thing to see rng
Though the true extent of both injuries isn’t fully known yet, Newcastle are likely to be without either playerwhen the Magpies travel to Dortmund for the return fixture in two weeks’ time rng
Newcastle are likely to be without Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy the next time they take on Borussia Dortmund (Action Images via Reuters)The defeat drops Newcastle down to third in Group F with PSG, who defeated AC Milan in the other match of the night, moving to the top spot and Dortmund jumping from fourth to second rng
Howe’s team will now need to secure a positive result in Germany next time out and will be without two dangerous players to help the team rng
“It’s going to be difficult [winning away from home] but we’re in the Champions League and nothing’s going to come easy rng
” Howe said about Newcastle’s next match rng
“When you start the competition and go into the group that we’re in, you know you’re going to have to win at some tough places to get through the group rng
“Today would have been a massive win for us, we didn’t get it but we have to dust ourselves down and when the Champions League comes back to us next week we have to be ready rng
“We look at today and are frustrated we didn’t get anything from it rng
We didn’t deserve to lose rng

Eddie Hearn insists Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury are poised to make more than £100m if the British heavyweights meet in the ring rng
The highly-anticipated fight, rng between the two defining fighters of their generation in British rng boxing, has been long-negotiated rng between Hearn and rival promoter Frank Warren rng
But with WBC world champion Fury now set to face Usyk, who holds the WBA, WBO and IBF belts, Joshua is poised to meet Wilder, who lost twice to the ‘Gypsy King’ during their compelling triology rng
But should both men emerge unscathed, Hearn anticipates a mega payday for both men rng
"They'll make over £100m each," Hearn said on Stick to rng Football rng
"If Fury beats Usyk and AJ beats Wilder, then they'll make over £100m each rng

Fury reads the fight well, a tremendous rng boxing IQ rng
"He's got rng better durability over rounds than AJ, probably Usyk, Wilder, he's a one-off because he's been rng boxing all his life rng
It's so natural for him rng
"Hearn also tipped Joshua to box on the same card in a potential clash rng between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, with the promoter talking up the possibility of a December date rng
Eddie Hearn expects a career-high payday for both Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury should both men meet in the ring next year (Getty Images)Talks have rumbled on over a heavyweight fight with Wilder, though that bout now appears unlikely to take place in December – as was originally discussed – and “AJ” may instead box a different opponent at the end of this year rng
According to his promoter Hearn, Joshua could fight in Abu Dhabi on 23 December, possibly on the same card as a long-awaited bout rng between compatriots Eubank Jr and Benn – who is also promoted by Hearn rng
And 23 December is one of the rumoured dates for Fury vs Usyk, the undisputed heavyweight title fight that was announced last week rng
Benn vs Eubank Jr was originally set for October 2022, but the bout collapsed just days before fight night, upon the revelation that Benn had failed two drug tests in the run-up to the contest rng
Benn, 26, was subsequently stripped of his licence by the British rng Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) and charged by UK Anti-Doping (Ukad), though the World rng Boxing Council cleared the unbeaten welterweight of any intentional wrongdoing rng
Later, the National Anti-Doping Panel lifted a provisional suspension on Benn, though the BBBofC and Ukad have appealed that move rng
As such, the Briton is still unable to fight in the UK, though he returned to the ring with a win over Rodolfo Orozco in Florida last month rng
It is likely due to his inability to box in the UK that Hearn’s proposed super-card featuring Eubank Jr and Joshua would take place in Abu Dhabi rng
Joshua, 33, last boxed in August, knocking out Robert Helenius after initial opponent Dillian Whyte failed a drug test rng
After Joshua’s win, it was revealed that Helenius had also failed a pre-fight drug test rng
Meanwhile, Eubank Jr most recently fought in September rng
