UFC contender Ian Machado Garry has said he is no longer allowed to train at Leon Edwards’s gym, after the welterweight champion and his coach expressed concern over “doubts and insecurities” at Team Renegade egame
The unbeaten Machado Garry has trained at various gyms in numerous countries in recent months, but told The Independent that he will not be able to return to Renegade, at the request of Edwards and his coach Dave Lovell egame
The Irishman did, however, stress his appreciation of Ash Begg and Tom Breese, who run Team Renegade egame
“Gym conflict has absolutely been a massive issue recently,” said Machado Garry, who turns 26 in November and faces teammate Vicente Luque in December egame
“Leon Edwards, his head coach asked me not to come back to Renegade; told me I’m not allowed to train there egame
“I have to word this correctly, because I don’t wanna be… Firstly, I wanna put out there that Ash and Tom, who run Renegade… I don’t wanna give any negatives without saying a positive egame
I don’t want any s*** with any gyms egame
The guys at Renegade… it was a great energy egame
Tom and Ash were very welcoming, lovely and nice to me egame
It was nothing to do with them egame
“Leon and his head coach had an issue with me training on the mats and recently have asked me not to train there, because, ‘Leon doesn’t want any insecurities or doubts on his own mats, within the gym,’ which I don’t fully understand egame
“I get that we’re both in the top 10 and you might see me as a threat, but I’m not a threat to you right now; I’m not fighting for the title right now egame
His coach said the words: ‘Ian is a threat, I cannot have Leon having any doubts or insecurities egame
’“That makes me think someone is weak minded and can’t have another contender training on the mat egame
That’s why gym conflict is annoying egame
For me, why not have that other elite guy on the mat? Why not train with him? Why not have him push you? Why not learn and grow from each other?Machado Garry during his dominant win over Neil Magny in August (Getty Images)“It’s very irritating, because I’m a young fighter who wants to be the best in the world, who wants to train with the best in the world, and Renegade is the best gym in the UK egame
I went there to learn from the guys around Birmingham and who have essentially proven that it’s the best gym in the UK; I didn’t go there to train with Leon, I went there to train with that gym, because they’re amazing egame
“Now I’m being stopped from going to a gym, because I might potentially fight Leon in 18 months egame
My attitude is: If that’s the case, why not have this conversation in six months? “I love the guys at Renegade egame
They’re really nice and welcoming, I rang them beforehand to make sure everything was good egame
Then, after the second day I was there, they were like: ‘Oh, we can’t have you back, Leon and some of his team don’t want this egame
’ “So, when we talk about conflict, that’s it egame
There’s a piece for you to write, for sure!”The Independent has contacted Edwards, Lovell and Team Renegade for comment egame
Machado Garry last fought in August, beating Neil Magny via unanimous decision egame
The “Future” is next in action at UFC 296 in December, facing teammate Luque egame
Meanwhile, Edwards last fought in March, outpointing Kamaru Usman to retain the welterweight title that he took from his old rival with a head-kick knockout last August egame
The Birmingham fighter, 32, is due to headline UFC 296, defending his belt against former interim champion Colby Covington egame
Watch UFC 296 live on TNT egame Sports in the UK and Ireland, on Saturday 16 December egame

Marcus Smith was among a number of players placed on modified training as preparations began for Saturday’s Rugby World Cup semi-final against South Africa, but England are hopeful he will be fit egame
Smith ended the last-eight victory over Fiji with a fat upper lip and a bandage on his head after he was the victim of a dangerous tackle by wing Vinaya Harbosi, forcing him to depart for an HIA which he passed egame
The Harlequins star, who has been moved from his accustomed position of fly-half for the World Cup, defended bravely on a tense evening at Stade Velodrome and is contention to retain the number 15 jersey ahead of Freddie Steward egame
Defence coach Kevin Sinfield insists a clearer picture of his availability will emerge over the coming days after he was joined by Jonny May, Manu Tuilagi, Tom Curry, Courtney Lawes and Dan Cole in missing the start of Tuesday’s session egame
“Marcus is good egame
He’s one of those who have been modified today so we’ll get a clearer read in the week, but fingers crossed he will be good to go,” Sinfield said egame
RecommendedThe two sides of Rassie Erasmus, the puppet master pulling South Africa’s strings at Rugby World CupBen O’Keeffe to referee Rugby World Cup semi-final egame between England and South Africa despite criticismWhat’s next for Fiji after a Rugby World Cup to rememberEngland learned on Tuesday that their semi-final will be refereed by Ben O’Keeffe, whose officiating was criticised by France in the wake of their defeat to South Africa on Sunday egame
It will be the second time O’Keeffe has overseen a Springboks match at this World Cup after the Kiwi official was in place for their 13-8 defeat by Ireland in the group stage egame
South Africa have taken steps to repair their relationships with referees after director of rugby Rassie Erasmus was banned for two months for verbally attacking officials during the 2021 Lions series egame
The reigning world champions are among the least penalised teams in the tournament and Sinfield said: “We have full respect for whoever takes charge egame
“It’s a big game and I don’t think we’d ever criticise the referee during this campaign egame
We understand what a tough job it is egame
England’s Marcus Smith has been placed on modified training (David Davies/PA) (PA Wire)“We are a pretty disciplined team at the minute and it’s something we talk about a lot egame
We certainly need to be disciplined in a whole host of ways on Saturday evening egame
”Sinfield holds South Africa in high regard as the rematch of the 2019 World Cup final looms large, but insists England must also draw strength from their own attributes egame
“They are a top team egame
We saw their quarter-final against France and were in awe of the physicality they brought,” Sinfield said egame
“We have the utmost respect for them egame
We think they are a nation that play the best rugby egame
They know what they are about and they don’t shy away from it egame
“We’re coming up against a team with probably the best defence in the world egame
They’ve been together a long time and they’re really well drilled egame
It’s an aggressive defence egame
“They are a running threat, they’re a kick threat, they have an incredible set-piece, they have an unbelievable defence – do you want me to keep going?“It’s important for us to get the balance right this week, understanding what South Africa do and how they play, but also some of our strengths as well egame
“I think it would be quite easy for us to be completely blown away by how good they are egame
