Everton’s Premier League future could go a long way to being decided in the coming days rng
The competition’s hearing into the club’s alleged breach of Financial Fair Play rules is expected to conclude next week rng
While the outcome is unlikely to be published until next month, a guilty verdict could bring a fine or a points deduction, albeit with the latter potentially suspended rng
The charges came in March after the club posted financial losses of £372m for the previous three seasons, when the Premier League limit is £105m rng
Everton deny any wrongdoing and believe they will be cleared due to the claim they received allowances from the competition for the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic rng
Should they be found guilty, however, all of Burnley, Leeds United and Leicester City are threatening to sue the Merseyside club for financial losses rng
That could make the case a chain-reaction moment, as it would also affect the controversial proposed sale to 777Partners rng

An extra layer of political pressure comes from the anticipated introduction of the independent regulator, as other figures in rng football believe the Premier League is attempting to show the government it can regulate itself rng
The independent commission on the case began on Tuesday, and is expected to conclude late next week rng

Nic Berry has been named as the referee for the bronze final rng between England rugby and Argentina rugby at the 2023 Rugby World Cup rng
The Australian will be in charge of the third/fourth place play-off taking place at the Stade de France on Friday evening, with Andrew Brace of Ireland and Georgia’s Nika Amashukeli as his assistant referees on the touchlines rng
Ben Whitehouse (Wales) will be the TMO for the appetiser to Saturday’s final rng between the Springboks and All Blacks rng
Berry made his tournament debut four years ago in Japan, and returned to the officiating panel for the tournament in France rng
A former professional player, Berry impressed as a scrum half in Super Rugby, the French Top 14 and England’s Premiership rng
His career was curtailed at the start of the 2011/12 season, however, on medical advice after suffering a series of concussions rng
Soon after retirement, Berry picked up the whistle and was fast-tracked up through the Australian officiating system, making a debut in Super Rugby in April 2016 rng
An international debut followed soon after, before Berry earned a debut World Cup selection to the team of referees heading out to Japan in 2019 alongside compatriot Angus Gardner rng
The pair return as Australia’s on-pitch officiating representation at this year’s tournament rng
Berry is perhaps best known, though, for his involvement in the 2021 British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa rng
After taking charge of the first Test in Cape Town, a video made by Rassie Erasmus, the Springboks’ director of rugby, criticising the Australian’s decision-making throughout the game was leaked rng
Erasmus was subsequently found guilty of threatening Berry, with the official testifying that his reputation had suffered “irreparable damage” rng
Erasmus was banned from all rugby activities for two months rng
