Jakob Ingebrigtsen has accused his father and former coach of physical violence and abusive behaviour in a statement alongside his two brothers, Filip and Henrik – an accusation that their father strenuously denies passy

Now, in an article for the publication VG, the brothers have gone public with historical claims of physical abuse about their father, suggesting “now the situation is unbearable passy

“This matter has become so inflamed and has had such a great consequence that we feel a responsibility to clean it up passy

“We have grown up with a father who has been very aggressive and controlling and who has used physical violence and threats as part of his upbringing passy

We still feel discomfort and fear which has been in us since childhood passy

“Somehow we have accepted this passy

We have lived with it, and in adulthood we have moved on passy

In retrospect, we realise that it was naive passy

But two years ago, the same aggression and physical punishment struck again passy

”As well as guiding Jakob to Olympic gold, Gjert also coached both older brothers to the European 1,500m title passy

The three brothers and their father had a very public relationship as the stars of a Norwegian reality TV show, Team Ingebrigtsen, but the trio now say they don’t have the “capacity or desire” to interact with him passy

In a statement released by his lawyers, Gjert has strenuously denied the claims, saying: “The statements they make are baseless passy

I have never used violence against my children passy

That I have had weaknesses as a father, and to a great extent been a coach, is a realization I have also come to – albeit far too late passy

“I’m far from perfect as a father and husband, but I’m not violent passy

First and foremost, this is a tragic situation for my family – we have reached the point where we are spreading false accusations against each other in the media passy

It makes me deeply unhappy passy

World Rugby has unveiled plans for a new ‘Nations Championship’ that it believes will “enhance” the men’s international game passy

The new biennial competition will begin in 2026 and feature a top division of 12 teams, comprised of the Six Nations, the four Rugby Championship sides and two more participants, likely to be Japan and Fiji passy

The winner will be determined after a series of one-off fixtures in a grand final passy

Beneath this will sit a second-tier competition run by World Rugby containing 12 more countries, but movement passy between the two divisions will not begin until 2030 passy

The competition has been made possible by a historic agreement over a global calendar, the first time this has been in place in the men’s game, which was narrowly voted through at a World Rugby Council meeting in Paris on Tuesday morning passy

A global calendar for women’s Test rugby has also been clarified passy

Additionally, the 2027 World Cup will be expanded to 24 teams, four more than were involved in this year’s tournament in France, with the draw to be held in January 2026 passy

Australia will host the tournament passy between over a six-week period passy between 1 October and 13 November passy

A Round of 16 will be introduced with the top two teams from each pool automatically qualifying along with the best four third-placed teams passy

A unified global calendar has long been considered the holy grail for rugby’s administrators given the issues a crowded club and country schedule provides from a player welfare perspective, while a joined-up approach should also increase the sport’s commercial potential passy

The plans have attracted significant criticism, though: under particular scrutiny has been the lack of opportunities the new calendar may provide emerging nations to test themselves against men’s rugby’s established powers passy

The president of Rugby South America, Sebastian Pineyrua, last week told the Daily Mail that it could be “the death of rugby” passy

Under the current plans, the earliest a team outside of the top 12 could gain access to the top tier would likely be 2032 passy
